Healthcare

State-of-the-art healthcare facilities throughout Greater Fort Lauderdale offer expert care to patients and their families. From specialized pediatric care to long-term residential nursing facilities, the area’s providers deliver a full continuum of diagnostic, treatment, prevention and wellness services.

Healthcare is also a major employment sector, accounting for more than 70,000 direct jobs in the South Florida region. In Broward, approximately 20 acute care hospitals have nearly 6,000 licensed beds and more than 3,000 affiliated physicians.

Healthcare Systems

Greater Fort Lauderdale is served by two public health systems: Broward Health and Memorial Healthcare System.

Recognized nationally for its excellence in healthcare, Broward Health is an integrated public health system working to meet the needs of the region’s business community as well as patients and families. Formerly known as the North Broward Hospital District, Broward Health is a non-profit community health system offering a full spectrum of healthcare services with numerous centers of clinical excellence that meet national standards for healthcare quality and safety.

One of the five largest public health systems in the nation, Broward Health was the only hospital system in Southeast Florida to be included on the 2010 list of SDI’s (healthcare analytics provider) top 100 U.S. integrated healthcare networks.  It operates more than 30 facilities, including Broward General Medical Center, North Broward Medical Center, Imperial Point Medical Center, Coral Springs Medical Center, the Chris Evert Children’s Hospital, Weston Regional HealthPark, Broward Community Health Services and Broward Health Physician Group.

The Comprehensive Cancer Programs at both Broward General Medical Center and North Broward Medical Center have been approved by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer and are affiliated with the world-renowned H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute in Tampa.

Founded in 1953, Memorial Healthcare System is the largest healthcare system in Southern Broward, nationally recognized for its high quality of care. It was one of only three healthcare systems nationwide to earn the Premier Award for Quality (AFQ) from the Premiere healthcare alliance for outstanding patient care and clinical excellence.
Memorial’s facilities include Memorial Regional Hospital and its Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital in Hollywood, Memorial Regional Hospital South in Hollywood, Memorial Hospital West and Memorial Hospital Pembroke in Pembroke Pines, and Memorial Hospital Miramar in Miramar. Other facilities include Memorial Manor Nursing Home.

Memorial Healthcare System provides a complete range of medical and surgical services including a certified trauma center, the Cardiac & Vascular Institute and the Cancer Institute, which provides local access to advanced research, continuing education and cutting-edge medical technology. In addition to home health and rehabilitation services, the Memorial Healthcare System also operates outpatient surgical centers and a network of ambulatory care centers in southern Broward.

In the private sector, HCA, one of the nation’s largest providers of healthcare services, manages four hospitals and two outpatient surgery centers in Broward. These include Northwest Medical Center in Margate, Plantation General Hospital and Medical Center in Plantation, University Hospital and Medical Center in Tamarac, Westside Regional Medical Center in Plantation, Outpatient Surgical Services of Plantation and Outpatient Surgery Center of Coral Springs.

Tenet Healthcare, the nation’s second largest provider of healthcare services, operates 10 acute care hospitals in the tri-county region, including North Shore at FMC Campus in Lauderdale Lakes. Its Florida headquarters is located in Coral Springs.

With Baptist Medical Plaza at Davie and Baptist Medical Plaza at Coral Springs, Baptist Health operates state-of-the-art outpatient centers with diagnostic imaging, as well as urgent care centers with high-end amenities.

Established in Weston in 1988, Cleveland Clinic Florida is a part of The Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Ohio, a non-profit, multi-specialty referral group practice, renowned worldwide for providing medical excellence with an emphasis on research and education. Cleveland Clinic Florida was one of only 13 hospitals in the nation recognized by the American Heart Association for the highest level of performance.

Fort Lauderdale’s Holy Cross Hospital has been serving Broward patients since 1955. Holy Cross is a member of Catholic Health East, sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas. Holy Cross Hospital provides a team of highly skilled medical professionals and leading-edge technologies through its centers of excellence.

Kindred Hospitals in Fort Lauderdale and Hollywood are part of Kindred Healthcare, a national healthcare company that uses an innovative approach to long-term acute care for patients with multi-system failures. Its hospitals and pulmonary units feature an interdisciplinary environment where physicians, nurses, therapists, nutritionists and social workers combine their expertise to provide quality care.

Nova Southeastern University

Nova Southeastern University’s Health Professions Division is a multidisciplinary academic health center with state-of-the-art facilities, including the College of Osteopathic Medicine, the only such college in the southeastern United States.

Located on NSU’s main campus in Davie, the Health Professions Division encompasses six colleges and a variety of academic programs. In addition to osteopathic medicine, the colleges include pharmacy, dentistry, optometry, allied health and nursing, and medical sciences.

NSU also operates local clinical centers that provide educational resources and patient care to South Florida communities. Treatment is coordinated by the nationally recognized faculty of the university’s clinical colleges and programs. The university is unique in its ability to provide a wide array of services within a rigorous interdisciplinary academic environment, ensuring university-level care for all patients.

Support Organizations

Many Broward residents and businesses play leading volunteer roles in community healthcare organizations such as American Red Cross, Area Agency on Aging of Broward County, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, American Heart Association, Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, Kidney Foundation of South Florida, United Way of Broward County and Henderson Mental Health Services. First Call for Help is a 24-hour informational hotline (211) that refers callers to the appropriate service agencies for assistance. The combined strength of these organizations helps make Broward County a healthy place to live and work.
