Florida Panthers Owner Vincent “Vinnie” Viola to Keynote Greater Fort Lauderdale Alliance Annual Meeting

The Greater Fort Lauderdale Alliance announced today that Vincent “Vinnie” Viola, Chairman, Owner and Governor of Sunrise Sports & Entertainment, will be the keynote speaker for its Annual Meeting on Thursday, October 19 from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Signature Grand in Davie.  Sunrise Sports & Entertainment operates the Florida Panthers Hockey Club as well as the Broward County-owned BB&T Center, one of the top ranked venues of its kind in the world.

A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., Viola graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1977. He later graduated from the U.S. Army Airborne, Air Assault, Infantry and Ranger Schools and served in the 101st Airborne Division. In 1983, he graduated from the New York University School of Law.

Viola is currently the Chairman Emeritus of Virtu Financial and is one of the nation's foremost leaders in electronic trading. He began his career in the financial services industry on the floor of the New York Mercantile Exchange and rose to be Vice Chairman and Chairman. He was recognized by the board of directors of the New York Mercantile Exchange for his efforts in leading the reopening of the Exchange following the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. Shortly thereafter, Viola conceived, founded and funded the Combating Terrorism Center at West Point, now in its fourteenth year of operation

He is the founder and largest stockholder in Independent Bank Group, Inc (Nasdaq: IBTX), a community banking chain headquartered in McKinney, Texas that he founded in 1989. In 2009, he was inducted into the Futures Industry Association Hall of Fame.

Viola has been widely recognized for his many philanthropic endeavors. He and his wife, Teresa, have three sons - John, Michael and Travis.

The Alliance’s Annual Meeting includes updates on results and accomplishments from throughout the fiscal year for the organization, which is the official public/private partner for economic development in Broward County. At the event, the Alliance will honor leaders who have made outstanding contributions to the organization throughout the past year, as well as an Alliance member company that has demonstrated exceptional support for the K-12 educational system.
