Broward continues to enjoy a low percentage unemployment rate at 3.3%

(Fort Lauderdale, FL) - Broward County’s job report indicated a 3.3 percent unemployment rate in October 2017.  This rate was 1.4 percentage point lower than the region’s year ago rate of 4.7 percent.  Nonagricultural employment increased by 25,200 jobs (+3.1 percent) over the year, with an employment of 851,000 in the Ft. Lauderdale-Pompano Beach-Deerfield Beach MSA (Broward County).  The region’s jobless rate was 0.3 percentage point lower than the state rate (3.6 percent).  Out of a labor force of 1,034,911, up 23,299 (+2.3) over the year, there were 34,994 unemployed Broward County residents.

“October 2017 was the 87th consecutive month with positive over-the-year job growth for the state of Florida,” said Greater Fort Lauderdale Alliance President and CEO Bob Swindell. “In addition, all industries experienced positive over-the-year job growth in Florida. “

Data and Analysis

The Ft. Lauderdale‐Pompano Beach‐Deerfield Beach Metro Division had the highest annual job growth compared to all metro areas in the state in education and health services (+9.800 jobs) in October 2017. The Ft. Lauderdale-Pompano Beach-Deerfield Beach metro area was tied for second highest annual job growth rate compared to all the metro areas in the state in information (+200 jobs) in October 2017. The Ft. Lauderdale‐Pompano Bch‐Deerfield Bch Metro Division had the fastest annual job growth rate compared to all the metro areas in the state in education and health services (+9.3 percent) in October 2017. The major industry sectors that added jobs over the year in the metro were: education and health services (+9.3 percent); construction (+9.5 percent); and professional and business services (+2.3 percent); trade, transportation and utilities (+1.2 percent); manufacturing (+2.9 percent); leisure and hospitality (+0.6 percent); financial activities (+0.7 percent); and information (+1.0 percent).

The major sectors that gained jobs from September 2017 to October 2017 were education and health services (+4,500 jobs); professional and business services (+4,300 jobs); leisure and hospitality (+2,700 jobs); trade, transportation, and utilities (+900 jobs); construction (+700 jobs); information (+300 jobs); and manufacturing (+200 jobs). The financial activities industry remained unchanged over the month.
