Groundbreaking Lesbian and Gay Novels of the 20th Century
Robert Don Adams
PROGRAM FEE: $20 member | $25 non-member
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: In this lecture course, we will look at the groundbreaking mid-twentieth-century lesbian and gay novels of Patricia Highsmith and Christopher Isherwood that paved the way for later LGBTQ+ writers openly to discuss homosexuality and sexual identity in their fiction. We will consider Highsmith’s pioneering 1952 novel, The Price of Salt, which later was made into the 2015 critically acclaimed movie, Carol, directed by Todd Haynes. And we will consider Christopher Isherwood’s classic 1964 novel, A Single Man, often considered his best work, which was transformed memorably into film by Tom Ford in the 2009 movie of the same title.
BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: Professor R. Don Adams teaches courses in modern literature at FAU, where he has been a faculty member since 1994. Professor Adams has been a Fulbright scholar in Vietnam and India and has published widely on LGBTQ+ literature and intellectual history.
