Broward County Public Schools high school students collected 11 of the county's 15 Silver Knight Awards, presented by the Miami Herald and El Nuevo Herald, at an event held Tuesday, May 19 at the James L. Knight Center in Miami. The Silver Knight winners demonstrated both excellence in academics and contributions to the community.

District students also earned 30 of 45 Honorable Mention recognitions, claiming 41 of 60 awards overall (68%). Last year, District students earned top recognition in 10 Silver Knight categories and received 30 Honorable Mention honors. Over the past four years, District students have combined to win 42 Silver Knight Awards and 122 Honorable Mentions.

The Honorable Mention winners include: Art - Sonika Raashi Data (Deerfield Beach HS); Athletics - Scott Venkataraman (Fort Lauderdale HS), Michael Ryan Lickstein (Cypress Bay HS) and Danielle Lyons (Dillard HS); Business - Cristina Maria Andres (Charles W. Flanagan HS) and Steven Ira Lerner (Coral Springs Charter HS); Drama - Ilana Kowarski (Hollywood Hills HS); English - Ashley Van Heel (Blanche Ely HS) and Amanda Geisler (Hollywood Hills HS); Foreign Language - Beatriz Oliveira (Marjory Stoneman Douglas HS), Yves Joel Kenol Elifils (Coconut Creek HS) and Luis Arias (Charles W. Flanagan HS); General Scholarship - Jefferson Sanchez (Hollywood Hills HS) and Jacqueline Babb (Pompano Beach HS); Journalism - Amirah Aziz (Pompano Beach HS) and Renee Anne Daggett (Fort Lauderdale HS); Mathematics - Bryan Amador (Stranahan HS) and Sabrina Martiello (Piper HS); Music - Elijah Taj Gee (Pompano Beach HS) and Robert Nolan (Stranahan HS); New Media - Ryan Jordan Garcia (Cypress Bay HS) and Christopher Foy (Stranahan HS); Social Science - Ryan Noelle Walker (College Academy at BC), Tyler McDonald (Hollywood Hills HS) and Matthew Noto (Pembroke Pines Charter HS); Speech - Brian Zakarin (J.P. Taravella HS) and Rameez Dossani (Hollywood HS); Vocational Technical - Samantha Moore (Cypress Bay HS), Imarhia Enogieru (William T. McFatter Technical HS) and Meivys Reyes (Hollywood Hills HS) .

The top winners each received a Silver Knight Award, a medallion and a cash award. The Honorable Mention winners collected engraved plaques and cash awards. The Silver Knights program began in Broward County in 1984.
