Broward County organizations team up to highlight South Florida tech landscape
Broward County Public Schools and the Greater Fort Lauderdale Alliance have announced a partnership to foster growth in the technology industry.
The TechGateway initiative showcases the thousands of technology companies based in South Florida in hopes of highlighting to students the potential of a fruitful tech career right at home.
“We’re working to build awareness of the strength of the technology industry throughout South Florida … so students will know about the many tech companies and career options that are available for them here,” said David Coddington, VP of business development for the Greater Fort Lauderdale Alliance.
Broward County Public Schools superintendent Robert W. Runcie echoed Coddington’s words.
“Our students are growing up in a technology-driven world with new and evolving career opportunities,” Runcie said. “It’s vital that we ensure our students are aware of these in-demand, high-wage career fields and ensure they have the skills they need to pursue them.”
The initiative includes a website that highlights more than 2,000 tech companies based in South Florida, from Citrix and United Data Technologies to CareCloud and Ultimate Software. A map that visually depicts the tech landscape has also been created and, through a partnership with BCPS, the Alliance will distribute a poster-size version of the map to all of Broward County’s middle and high schools.
In addition, students in the district are also encouraged to participate in a TechGateway App Challenge, calling upon students to channel their computer science skills to design, storyboard and create an app that incorporates the TechGateway map and initiative.
The initiative, made possible through collaboration with the Alliance’s economic development organization counterparts in Miami-Dade and Palm Beach Counties, is a supplement to BCPS strides to increase access to internet and technology at county schools.
“This school year, we expect to positively impact more than 50,000 students with computer science offerings at all 236 of our schools, benefitting students from elementary to high school,” he said. “Our partnership with the Alliance allows us to promote the incredible career options available for our graduates right here in our region.”
