Broward County Public Schools Debate Initiative News

The National Speech and Debate Association annually hosts the largest academic competition in the world, highlighting the most talented speakers and debaters from across the country. This year's event will be held in Dallas, Texas at the end of June and is sure to be a competitive tournament. Qualifying to attend Nationals is quite a challenging task.

The BCPS Debate Initiative is proud to have 43 students who qualified, including 2 students that auto-qualified based on their enormous success at last year's tournament. This year we are also excited to announce that we are sending ten middle school teams to the tournament, the largest number of middle school students to travel to Nationals since the start of the Debate Initiative in 2012.

Daliss Hicks of Miramar High School was first introduced to Speech and Debate during her freshman year and quickly fell in love. Competing in both Program Oral Interpretation and Dramatic Interpretation, Daliss has qualified to Nationals all four years of her high school career. She is ranked in the Top 5% nationally. Daliss has received over $80,000 in Scholarships and will attend Western Kentucky University, where she will major in
Theatre and be on the WKU Forensics team.

Sabrina Lyn of West Broward High School was selected by coaches across the District as the 2019-20 Student of the Year!  Sabrina's ability to lead, teach, and motivate her peers has kept Bobcat Debate at the top of the national debate rankings! Her tireless dedication to not only her own success, but also novices, middle schoolers, and elementary debaters ensures success for years to come! Sabrina will be competing for the George Mason University Debate Team starting in 2019-2020 school year.

State Championships for both Novice and Varsity Debaters were held in the late spring and, as expected, Debate Broward students swept the competition! At Varsity State Champs, BCPS had Champions in seven events including Dramatic Interpretation, Extemporaneous Speaking, Humorous Interpretation, Informative Speaking, Policy Debate, Program Oral Interpretation, and Lincoln-Douglas Debate. At Novice State Champs, BCPS had five champions in Dramatic Interpretation, Original Oratory, Humorous Interpretation, Impromptu Speaking, and Policy Debate.

Students participating in Debate ended the 2018-2019 school year strong! More than 600 students competed at the Elementary, Middle, and High School Championships.  Many former alumni in addition to our Superintendent and School Board Member Laurie Rich Levinson attended the events which took place at three different schools in May.
