AutoNation Pledges $250,000 to the Transformation of Downtown Fort Lauderdale’s Huizenga Park
Fort Lauderdale, Florida (November 20, 2023) – AutoNation, Inc. (NYSE:AN), is making a substantial commitment of $250,000 over the course of five years to support the transformation of Huizenga Park in downtown Fort Lauderdale. This philanthropic endeavor serves as both a testament to the enduring legacy of the late H. Wayne Huizenga, AutoNation's founder, and a resounding commitment to the company's hometown.
AutoNation's headquarters is conveniently located near Huizenga Park, and upon its completion, the park is expected to serve as a recreational area for over 500 AutoNation associates. This donation not only honors Wayne Huizenga's legacy but also signifies the company's commitment to its hometown.
Mike Manley, the Chief Executive Officer of AutoNation, expressed the sentiment behind this generous donation, stating, "This is to pay homage to our founder and is also an investment in our hometown. Wayne meant so much to this community. It is our privilege to continue to honor his legacy. Wayne Huizenga's vision and leadership were instrumental in the rapid growth of AutoNation, as well as his recognition that consumers deserved a higher standard from automotive retailers. His influence paved the way for AutoNation to become an industry leader, setting the bar for excellence.”
Steve Hudson, Chairman of the Huizenga Park Foundation, acknowledged AutoNation's contribution as the first company founded or led by Wayne Huizenga to invest in the Huizenga Park Reimagined project. “This investment reflects the success story of AutoNation, which has contributed to Fort Lauderdale's transformation into a world-class destination.”
AutoNation has a strong culture of giving back to the community and has contributed over $35 million to various charitable community partners since 2013, primarily in support of cancer research through its Drive Pink (DRVPNK) mission. The company has consistently ranked among the top philanthropic corporations in South Florida, according to the South Florida Business Journal’s Corporate Giving List, demonstrating its commitment to the health, wellness, and growth of the local community.
Huizenga Park Reimagined, located at the intersection of Las Olas Boulevard, Andrews Avenue, and the New River, will feature various outdoor spaces for leisure, dining, physical activities, events, and gatherings. One of these spaces, the AutoNation-sponsored Deck, will be located next to Fort Lauderdale's picturesque Riverwalk and will host intimate performances and small gatherings.
Thanks to the support of companies like AutoNation, the Huizenga Park Reimagined project is close to breaking ground, with the aim of creating a signature gathering place in downtown Fort Lauderdale and setting a new standard for urban parks in South Florida. The project is being led by the Fort Lauderdale Downtown Development Authority (DDA).
