YMCA of South Florida, City of Hallandale Beach to Co-Host “Fleet Week: Salute to the Military” May 11

Hallandale Beach, FL (May 1, 2024) – Fleet Week has been a South Florida staple for three decades, allowing residents and visitors to celebrate the U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps and U.S. Coast Guard.  This year’s event – “Fleet Week Miami” - will take place May 5–12.

For the first time together the City of Hallandale Beach and the YMCA of South Florida will host “Fleet Week: Salute to the Military.” The event will take place on Saturday, May 11 from 9:00 am – 12:00 noon, and will be held at the Hallandale Beach YMCA Family Center (501 SE 1st Ave., Hallandale Beach) and Peter Bluesten Park. Admission is free and the activities inside the YMCA are open to members and non-members.

“At the YMCA of South Florida, we are proud to recognize and honor the contributions of our military, and Fleet Week is a fantastic way to bring our community together while paying tribute to those who serve our country,” said YMCA of South Florida President & CEO Sheryl A. Woods. “Combined with all the fun and healthy activities available for the entire family, this event promises to be a special occasion for all. The City of Hallandale Beach is a tremendous partner, and we’re excited that we have been able to join forces and provide a meaningful experience for the military and our community.”

The festivities will kick off with a tribute to the military, featuring the JROTC programs at Hallandale Beach High School and Fort Lauderdale High School. The day’s activities will include music with a DJ, the presence of first-responder vehicles, demonstrations from Military and City of Hallandale police dogs and a bounce house. There will also be a competition between sailors from the U.S. Navy and Hallandale Beach police and firefighters, while the Junior Dolphins youth football program will be holding a mini-clinic. Snacks and beverages will be available from local food trucks.

There will be all sorts of physical fitness activities available for the kids inside the YMCA, including water safety protocols at the pool. All attendees will have the opportunity to pen letters to our military members stationed around the world.

“As Mayor of the City of Hallandale Beach, and proud daughter of WWII Air Force Purple Heart recipient, Peter Ventura, it is such an honor to partner with the YMCA of South Florida to host the Fleet Week Miami Military Salute,” said Hallandale Beach Mayor Joy Cooper. “I have always looked upon Fleet Week Miami as a great way to recognize our amazing men and women in the Armed Forces.  Not only is Fleet Week Miami an awesome display of America’s military strength, but also a great opportunity for all ages to support our men and women on the front lines of defending our country. The City of Hallandale Beach is proud to welcome the Sailors, Marines, and Coast Guardsmen of 2024 Fleet Week Miami to our great City!”
