BCPS Honors Outstanding Educators and Employees at the 2026 Caliber Award Dr. Saima Sanaullah, a Science Teacher at Plantation High School, was Named Teacher of the Year

Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) celebrated excellence in education during its annual Caliber Awards on Friday, February 6, 2026, recognizing the District’s most outstanding educators and employees. The red-carpet celebration, held at the Broward County Convention Center, honored the exceptional leadership, innovation and dedication of more than 500 nominees, culminating in the recognition of 16 finalists and this year’s top honorees. More than 1,100 community leaders, business partners, educators and supporters attended the celebration.

The prestigious Teacher of the Year honor was awarded to Dr. Saima Sanaullah, a science teacher at Plantation High School. As BCPS top educator, Dr. Sanaullah will receive cash and prizes, including a Honda vehicle of choice with a paid two-year lease, generously provided by Rita and Rick Case Automotive Group.

The Caliber Awards also recognized outstanding individuals whose leadership and service strengthen student success across the District, including Principal of the Year, Assistant Principal of the Year and School/District Employee of the Year. Winners and finalists across all categories were honored and received prizes made possible through the generous support of BCPS business and community partners. 

“These honorees represent the very best of Broward County Public Schools,” said BCPS Superintendent Dr. Howard Hepburn.  “Their passion, innovation and unwavering commitment to students inspire excellence across our District. We are proud to recognize their extraordinary contributions and grateful to all our partners for their invaluable support, which made this celebration possible.”

BCPS extends heartfelt congratulations to all 2026 Caliber Awards nominees, finalists and winners whose dedication and service continue to elevate educational excellence across Broward County.

Teacher of the Year

Dr. Saima Sanaullah, Plantation High School

Dr. Saima Sanaullah is a veteran science educator and department chair at Plantation High School with more than 14 years of teaching experience in advanced academic and honors programs. She has driven notable improvements in student performance – raising Biology End of Course proficiency from 37% to 63% – contributing to her school’s overall grade improvement. Known for data-driven instructional leadership and innovative teaching strategies, Dr. Sanaullah fosters a positive school culture that empowers both students and teachers.

Principal of the Year

Cormic Priester, Rock Island Elementary School 

Cormic Priester, Principal of Rock Island Elementary School, is a visionary leader whose student-centered approach has driven significant gains in attendance, enrollment and academic performance. Under her guidance, the school earned an “A” rating for the first time since 2009. Priester promotes collaboration, mentors staff for professional growth and connects families with needed resources. Her data-driven leadership, high expectations and unwavering commitment to student success continue to elevate the Rock Island Elementary community.

Assistant Principal of the Year

Anna Koltunova, Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School 

Anna Koltunova, Assistant Principal of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, is recognized for strengthening schoolwide instructional systems and driving exceptional gains in student achievement. She has guided the school through critical transitions, expanded advanced academic opportunities and helped position the school among the District’s top performers. Her leadership reflects resilience, collaboration and a deep commitment to student success.

School/District Employee of the Year

Vanderbilt Carpenter III, Deerfield Beach High School 

Vanderbilt Carpenter III, Security Specialist at Deerfield Beach High School, goes above and beyond to support students and staff. With    experience as a Behavioral Technician and Campus Monitor, as well as in crisis management, he plays a key role in maintaining a safe and supportive environment for students. His dedication and care have made a lasting impact on the Deerfield Beach High community.
